What Is the Alba World Truffle Auction?
The World Alba White Truffle Auction is an annual, invitation-only charity auction dedicated to the prized Alba white truffle.
Held during truffle season in Piedmont, it takes place at Grinzane Cavour Castle, with simultaneous satellite auctions hosted in cities around the world.
In 2025, the auction was held on 9 November, with satellite events in Hong Kong, Singapore, Vienna, Frankfurt, Bangkok, and—for the first time—Rio de Janeiro.
2025 Auction Results and Highlights
The 2025 edition raised €1.13 million for international charities, supporting projects ranging from medical care for children in Gaza and the West Bank to a hospital initiative in Kenya and an animal welfare organisation in Singapore.
Each satellite venue hosted its own auction, with truffles transported from Piedmont by official delegates. At Grinzane Cavour Castle, three lots weighing 249 g, 331 g, and 402 g were sold, with winning bidders also receiving magnums of Barolo and Barbaresco, along with oversized panettoni.
The evening culminated in the auction’s most prestigious lot: a rare triple-lobed white truffle weighing just over one kilogram. Bidding took place simultaneously across all participating cities, with the final bid coming from Hong Kong, where the truffle sold for €110,000. The host jokingly referred to it as a “trinelli”—a playful nod to the Piedmontese binelli, which describes two truffles fused together.
White Truffle Prices in 2025: Auction vs Market
While auction prices are symbolic and exceptional, the market price for white truffles is set at the World Truffle Market in Alba, and depends on the quality and quantity of truffles available each year.
At the 2025 Alba Truffle Fair, I saw prices ranging from around €3,400 per kilo for smaller truffles up to €5,000 per kilo for larger ones.
Why the Truffle Auction Matters
Alba white truffles are famously elusive, relying on healthy forest ecosystems, skilled trifolao, and highly trained dogs.
Events like the World Truffle Auction play an important role in raising awareness of this fragile balance, while also funding humanitarian and environmental causes worldwide.
