What's the Climate Like in the Piedmont Region of Italy?

Piedmont's climate is changeable and varies across the region—the following is a snapshot of how it changes by month, including variation between mountains and lowlands.

When's the best time to visit Piedmont? This guide covers seasonal highlights, events, and what to expect at any time of year.

January

This is the coldest and darkest month, when snow is most likely across the region—expect frosty mornings, misty hills, and icy mountain winds.

With temperatures ranging from 0-5°C (32-41°F) and 3.5 hours of sunlight, days are crisp and short, while temperatures regularly plunge below zero at night.

February

In February, the cold continues, with little noticeable change in temperature and daylight from January.

Although highs reach 5°C (41°F) in Turin, temperatures continue to be considerably lower in the mountains and higher hills, with snow, frost, and ice still likely across the region, and temperatures regularly dropping to zero.

March

March marks the slow transition out of winter, with longer days but a lingering chill.

Average temperatures rise to around 10°C (50°F) while lows hover around 4°C (39°F), with roughly 12 hours of daylight, though conditions remain variable.

Rainfall increases, and while snow becomes less common in the plains, frost and wintry conditions can still occur in higher elevations and mountain areas.

April

This is when it truly starts to feel like spring, with daytime temperatures rising to 13°C (55°F) in Turin, although nights can still be a chilly 6°C (43°F).

As the third-wettest month, rainfall averages 105mm, and the changeable spring weather requires layers and waterproofs. At higher elevations, the snow usually melts, but the cold can linger.

Rainfall is widespread across the region, with heavier showers more common in the foothills and Alpine areas, while the plains tend to experience milder, intermittent rain.

June

When summer finally arrives in June, it's often accompanied by the last of the spring rains. But with an average of 15.5 hours of daylight and 7.5 hours of sunshine, you'll barely notice the odd passing shower.

With average highs of 25°C (77°F) and lows of 17°C (63°F) in Turin and similar temperatures in the hills and mountains, it's one of the most pleasant months.

July

Temperatures rise noticeably, with highs of 25°C (77°F and lows of 17°C (63°F) in Turin, making July the hottest month.

The Po Valley and lower hills tend to turn humid, while higher elevations provide cooler nights and relief from the heat.

While in the lowlands, this is one of the driest months, summer storms in the mountains can bring considerable rainfall.
